Agoos capped a good week with the national team after earning his first cap on Jan. 10. The defender scored his first goal, which proved to be the winner.

Though @USSoccerHistory has Balboa playing in the first of the two friendly's on Jan. 10, here is a video of him describing the trip and the matches. I don’t know who is right but the story is interesting.

The US opened Gold Cup Group C play against Trinidad and Tobago, who had previously lost 3-2 to El Salvador.

6’
Arnold Dwarika opened the scoring with this simple goal.

17’
The Americans answered when Tab Ramos whipped in a corner from the right. Alexi Lalas helped it on and Eric Wynalda was on the back post for the easy nodded finish. Simple corner play worked well and now we are level.

34’
Ramos stepped over another corner from the right. After a clear header from Paul Caligiuri and some confusion in front of the goal, Lalas played a simple pass to Wynalda and the striker converted to give the US the lead.

43’
T&T equalized after some crafty work from Evans Wise set up the chance for Dwarika, who converted for his second of the match. Tough break right before the half with Lalas down at the beginning of the play after a 50-50.

53’
The Americans restored the lead for good with a clever set-piece. Wynalda to Ramos gave Joe-Max Moore the angle to fire home to the right corner.

The US opened the 1996 Gold Cup with three points. Next is El Salvador on Jan. 16 for the top spot in Group C.
