Leading into hosting the 1994 FIFA World Cup, the U.S. Men's National team played in 18 matches prior to the summer tournament so the players could play together in as many competitive matches as possible. Along with the Carlsberg Cup in Hong Kong, the U.S. hosted a tournament called the "Joe Robbie Cup" named after the former Miami Dolphins owner.

The tournament format would be a two-day competition with double-headers. The U.S. played Bolivia in the opening match and drew 1-1, with Cobi Jones scoring for the Americans. Tony Meola made five saves in the match.

The match was also used as a test for Vice President Al Gore to get used to soccer protocol. Gore would be the one who would hand the World Cup trophy over to Dunga as Brazil would win the World Cup five months later.

Gore attended the match before taking the great locker room picture with the team following the match.
