The Yanks earned the team's first victory at the World Cup in front of 18,000. Bart McGhee and Tom Florie scored twice in five minutes before halftime before Bert Patenaude claimed the points with a goal in the 88'.

The ease of the victory came as a surprise with the US having a significant number of players with few caps.
