This goalless draw was the first match in charge for Lothar Osiander, who took over for Alkis Panagouliasas.

He had to start the rebuild after not qualifying for the 1986 World Cup. 

Osiander turned his attention to qualification for the 1988 Summer Olympics, which included heroics against 🇨🇦 and beatings of 🇸🇻 and 🇹🇹. 

The #USMNT failed to make the second round of the Olympics, going 1-1-1 in the group.

Gansler replaced Osiander in 1989.
