On this day in 2001, the US falls to FIFA No. 1 ranked Brazil

Imagine having to play the top-rated national team in the world according to FIFA less than a week after beating your archrival to open World Cup qualifying.

The USMNT hosted Brazil three days after the historic 2-0 win over Mexico in Columbus. The Yanks made nine changes from the team that beat Mexico and despite keeping the match competitive throughout, Brazil was too much in the 2-1 defeat.

A young Ronaldinho opened the scoring with this incredible free-kick in the 25th minute.

40’
The Americans equalize before the break through Clint Mathis.

Chris Armas slips in Mathis and his shot across goal finds the back of the net.

An exchange between Silvinho and Roque Junior produces the easy chance and finish for Euller.
