Bert Patenaude had his historic day in the final Group 4 match with a chance for the US to top the group. He opened the scoring in the 10' before doubling the lead five minutes later. That goal was in dispute with a couple different stories: as an own goal by Aurelio González (according to the RSSSF), a regular goal by the U.S.'s Tom Florie (according to the official FIFA match record), or as Patenaude's second goal (according to the United States Soccer Federation). Wikipedia
He capped his hat-trick with a goal in the 50' and the US secured the two points to top the group. The dispute of the second goal led to the question of who had the first World Cup hat-trick. On Nov 10, 2006, FIFA confirmed Patenaude scored the second goal and has the first World Cup hat-trick.
