John Brooks signed with Wolfsburg for a then-record fee for American. After asking for a transfer request from Hertha Berlin, Wolfsburg paid €20 million for the defender. Brooks has been a mainstay in central defense for Wolfsburg since the move, playing in 29 league matches during the 2018-19 Bundesliga campaign.

"The decision to leave my hometown wasn't easy," Brooks said in a statement. "But after talks with (Wolfsburg sporting director) Olaf Rebbe and (coach) Andries Jonker I really wanted to switch to Wolfsburg because they were both able to convince me quickly of their plans."
